If you look at all cart sales in the U.S., which only account for 1.4% of the market, outback makes up the majority. In fact, 85% of all carts sold in the U.S. are Subaru Outbacks. While other automakers have tried and failed to get Americans interested in carts, Subaru has thrived.
Subaru Outback Safety
All Outback models are equipped with Subaru Vision Driver Assistance Technology as standard. This safety suite includes adaptive cruise control with lane center, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assistance. Other optional features include blind-spot monitoring with rear traffic alerts and reverse automatic braking.
Although not included in the Onyx Edition XT tester, Subaru’s DriveFocus Disruption Mitigation System is also available on Limited trim and above. The system uses interior sensors to detect whether the driver is becoming tired or distracted. It will then remind the driver to pay attention to the road ahead.
While the EPA calls it a cart, the Subaru Outback is technically classified as a mid-sized SUV. That categorization puts it in dangerous territory against much larger vehicles, including Subaru’s own Ascent SUV. But buyers prefer vehicles that feel smaller on the road but can still carry all their belongings.

The rear cargo area has 32.5 cubic feet of space, which as you can see from our adorable volunteers, is plenty of room for your furry friends. Although the rear area is not as big as some compact crossovers like the Honda CR-V, mainly due to the lower Inland height, the Subaru makes ground when you fold the rear seats down.
With mostly flat seats, the Outback offers 75.7 cubic feet of competitive space. We also liked how Subaru included hooks to lower the rear seats in the seats and in the cargo area.
We probably won’t take it through Moab, but Subaru outback should prove pretty rough for most buyers. It offers 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which is more than you’ll get from many competing SUVs.
Combined with Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system plus the X Mode featuring downhill controls, outback can handle most adverse weather situations. Using the X-Mode control, drivers can switch from normal settings to snow/dirt or snow/mud inside.
Just like the current Legacy sedan, the Outback is based on Subaru’s new Global Platform. Subaru says the new architecture offers improved rigidity, providing more responsive steering, smoother and quieter travel, and better handling.
It’s not just a marketing claim, you can really feel it when you drive outback. It’s not a sports car but the steering feels very responsive with car-like handling. Motivated by a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-liter boxer that delivers 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, it feels very fast, with 0-60 mph coming in about 6.3 seconds.
No matter how well Subaru disguises the Outback as an SUV, its cart-like style won’t appeal to everyone. Even the Onyx Edition XT, which features sports black accents and grey wheels, can turn off shoppers who prefer the upright style of a traditional crossover rather than the layout of a long roof cart.
Likewise, body cladding and roof racks present a rough and outdoorsy vibe that may not gel with urban or luxury buyers.
Subaru Outback Onyx Edition Price
The 2022 Subaru Outback starts at $26,795 but being the power madman that we are, we’ll choose one level of turbocharged XT trim. The Onyx Edition XT is the most affordable of the lot starting at $35,145 and offers great value for money with its unique exterior trim, hand-free power tailgate, 180-degree front camera, and X Mode.
However, you’ll still need to add an 11.6-inch Starlink infotainment system and reverse automatic braking as part of the $1,845 package. By the time you add that option package, you might as well step into xt limited trim for $37,995. with a durable black and gray StarTex Onyx Edition seat with green stitching, the perforated leather in the Limited trim is softer and more comfortable.
