In my 2.5 model, the 2.5-liter Flat-4 developed 175 horsepower and 174 pound-foot torque. Each Outback uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that does not have gears but includes manual mode. When accelerating, the paddle shifter can send the CVT through a series of six simulated Gear ratios, imitating conventional automatic transmissions.

Even more than ever, Outback stands out for safety technology, making it a wise family choice. The new-standard vision package includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active line control. Blind-spot monitors are optional for Trim Premium levels but are standard on Limited and Touring.

Outbacks have been well done in crash-testing. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration scores 2020 Outback traffic in five stars overall, and also for both frontal and side effects. Only rollover resistance (numbers counted) dips to four stars? As do almost all vehicles. Outstanding vision results from low Beltline, equipped with relatively slim roof pillars.

Simply laid out and seated on a raised suspension, the Outback hopper looks handsome. Unpainted bottom Bumper and panel rocker trim enhance rough, down-to-basics appearance.

Except for the wheels, four Trim levels are not much different. The base model does not have a standard colored window at the top Trim level.

Spacious and refined, neatly laid out and beautifully appointed, Outback can accommodate five occupants. The Driver faced a logical control layout, on top of an Infotainment touch screen that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Premium and higher trim levels have an 8.0-inch display, with available navigation. The base model gets a 6.5-inch screen. Basic and Premium Outbacks feature upholstery, while Limited and Touring editions are upgraded to skin that doesn’t feel top-notch.

The rear seat rider enjoys an incredible stretch of space. Three can fit a little squeeze.

To bring a high item, a crossover? Including the Finnish’s Forester? maybe wiser. Otherwise, it has all the capacity that a large family needs in the interior. Behind the upright seatbacks, the cargo volume was 36 cubic feet, extending to 73 cubic feet with their seatbacks folded flat.

Better able to off-Road than many All-out SUVS, Subaru Outback rides comfortably and handles well. Standard 17-Inch wheels at low Trim levels produce gentle travel. The optional 18-inch rubber generates feedback that is slightly larger than the road.

No powertrain mastered. Basic engine performance is adequate but not better, balanced with an amazing fuel economy. The 4-cylinder base can feel sluggish. Although much less Frugal, the 6-cylinder version is practically essential for anyone who often climbs the old upgrades.

Subaru CVT keeps the engine well behaved, with low revs. Adeptly tuned, it helps the hinterland feel quite alive in urban driving, stimulated by a surprisingly sharp throttle response. Crossing the highway is far less spirited, especially if the hinterland is filled with passengers.

The standard ALL-wheel drive produces very prominent traction regardless of the terrain. When off-Road or face the snow, X-mode can change the traction control and activate the hill down control. Assisted by 8.7 inches of land Clearance, a carefree Outback scampers along a paved road. Kinship to the Subaru Legacy sedan is translated into a path of courtesy that suggests high cars.

The 4-cylinder Outback is EPA-Rated at 25/32 MPG City/Highway or 28 MPG Combined. Choosing a stronger Flat-6, the estimate sinks sharply, to 20/27/22 mpg. Outbacks use ordinary gasoline.
