2020 Subaru Outback Turbo Review, Reveal – Subaru Outback has always been a left-of-center competitor in the Mudroom Crossover-SUV. It’s more of a high cart than a sports-utility upright vehicle, with lots of clearance ground and plenty of space inside. We like the Outback for thinking a bit out of the box. And the new 2020 Outback debut at the New York Auto Show this week offers an update that expands the appealing model without deviating from the charming formula.
For starters, The 2020 Outback is now rising on the Subaru global platform, which underlies the ascent, Crosstrek, Forester, Impreza and redesigned 2020 Legacy, the latter of which largely forms the basis for this redesigned wagon. The new Outback is not much bigger than its predecessor, but Subaru said the structure is significantly more rigid than before.

At first glance, this is one of those not-Blink-or-you’ll-Miss-it redesigns, but the PR department insists on asserting this new outback 100 percent hit new. Inside, the new Outback gets a massive technological upgrade, with an 11.6-inch way, a portrait-oriented display of Infotainment, which is standard on all but basic trim levels. This new Touchscreen runs the latest version of the Starlink automaker Infotainment system, with optional TomTom-based navigation and a new application called Chimani (which types of sounds like granola-based snacks), which provides information Detailed about all 417 national parks in the US–how precise Subaru is.
Whether you’re getting a large touchscreen or picking a basic model, every Outback 2020 comes standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth Audio and Over-The-air updates. All Outbacks also come with Subaru’s vision safety technology, which includes adaptive cruise control and line-centered technology. LED Light, reverse auto braking, blind-spot monitoring, Head-up screen, and front view camera are all available as an option or bundled into a higher Trim level.

One cool new addition to the Infotainment system is Chimani, an application that provides a comprehensive guide for each of the American National Parks, including the history and highlights written by local travel experts, plus Hundreds of other interesting places.
Otherwise, interior are no bigger than before, although Subaru says it’s much quieter, with the overall material better. Outback has 75.7 cubic meters of space behind the front seat-almost the same as the other intermediate crossover-and can have with the hand lift free power. Instead of kicking your feet under the bumper like on many cars with this technology, the Outback system activates when you wave (or arm, if you carry a grocery bag) in front of the Subaru logo at Hatch.
Those who can prevent their attention from the screen may also appreciate the quieter interior environment provided by the sealing and thicker, acoustic laminated glass (front B-pillar). Fancy Limited and Touring models get a 10-way power seat with thigh-driver adjustment support and three-level seat heaters that now warm up the shoulders as well as the lower back. The full dimension has not yet been published, but the Max cargo chamber increased from 73.3 to 75.7 cubic feet. The rear hatch is said to be wider and now offers a hands-free unlock. This feature and a new cargo cover that lifts with one touch are equally new to Subaru and will be standardized on most of the Trim Outback levels. The standard roof rails feature crossbars that pull back onto the side rails when not in use.
Now for our spotter guide to differentiate the new Outback. Foglamps switch from round to vertical stacks, and their gray cladding is set to an unbroken elongated on the nose. The cladding side once again extends up and over the arch wheel in a narrow ribbon and features a stone Rail-like feature extending ahead of the front door and dropping towards the back of the back door. The Beltline also rises for a little more wedge, pinching the rear quarter window a bit. That’s about it. That’s as much as Subaru bravely tinker with top seller designs.
For a rough addition among us, Subaru boasts an Onyx Edition Outback, which starts with a second-of-basic Premium Trim and adds a water-repellant seat material, unique 18-inch wheels, and a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine. The Onyx Edition also gets a handsfree Power liftgate, Front-View camera, and dual-mode X-mode drive settings.
Onyx Edition XT is one of several 2020 inland models, including Base, Premium, Limited, Touring, Limited XT and Touring XT. Prices for all these models will be announced when the Outback arrives at the Subaru dealers this autumn.
